My Abuelita

Bibliography: Johnston, T. (2009). My Abuelita. Illus. Yuyi Morales. Orlando, FL: Harcourt Publishing

Brief Annotation: A young boy tells the story of his great big Abuelita. He uses lots of descriptive words to describe her such as she is round like a pumpkin. He talks about the things that his Abuelita does every morning like stretch and shower and makes a breakfast of tortillas and starry eggs. Abuelita needs some help remembering things, but she has a voice like no other that other children enjoy.

Genre: Picturebook

Grade Level: 1st-4th grade

Readers who will like this: Anyone who has a family member that they think is really interesting or unusual in a way. Books on mexican/hispanic culture.

Response/Rating: I would give this book a 3 for its beautiful and realistic illustrations. I also enjoy the descriptive language and it is a good representation of the mexican/hispanic culture.

Question to ask before a read aloud: Do you have a relitave that seems unusual but rather interesting to you? How would you describe them?
