Max's Words

Bibliography: Banks, K., & Kulikov, B. (2006). Max's words. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Annotation: This book is a poem about max and his words. He asks his brothers if he could have one of the stamps and coins that they collected. However his brothers say no. Max then comes up with the idea of collecting words instead. His collection of words grows and grows and grows. He collected words that made him feel good. He collected words that he liked to eat, like ice cream. He collected words of his favorite colors. Eventually his collection was so large he had to group the words and place them on the ground. Max began making sentences with his words that spread into the hallway. At this point he would have to get rid of some words. Max told his brothers that when he gets enough words he will have a story. Max began creating his story when his brothers stepped into help. Once the story was completed he the brothers stated that they wanted another story and Max said he wanted a stamp and a coin. The brothers happily traded a coin and a stamp for some words and began creating stories.

Genre: Fiction

Grade: K-3

Readers: The readers that will enjoy this book are ones that like to create stories. Readers that like complicated poetry and verses will also enjoy this story.

Rate/Response: 8 I really enjoyed this book. It is difficult for the poetry and verse aspect but otherwise is an excellent book especially for getting children interested in words and stories.

Question: Does anyone in your family collect something? Do you collect something? Have you ever written a story?
