Sand Sister

Bibliographic Information: White, A. (2004). Sand Sister. Illus. Yuyi Morales. Cambridge, MA: Barefoot Books Inc.

Brief Annotation: Paloma, her mother, and her father go to the beach one day. As Paloma marvels in its beauty, she finds herself lonely and jealous of the bother children at the beach who have someone to enjoy their time with. So she decides to draw a sister in the sand. Through her imagination this sand drawing comes to live and partakes in beach activities with her. When the tide comes, her sand sister must go. There is a silver lining however; Paloma’s parents have some exciting news for her!

Genre: Fiction, Picture book

Grade Level: k-2

Response/Rating: 3; the artistic ability of the illustrator is evident throughout the entirety of this book. I like that Paloma is able to use her imagination to entertain herself, instead of complaining about her boredom. This is a very cute book about the excitement of sisters.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you like to do when you go to the beach?
