Rain Player

Bibliographic Information: Wisniewski, D. (1991). Rain Player. Illus. David wisniewski. New York, NY: Clarion Books.

Brief Annotation: This story is about a young man who challenges the Mayan Rain God, Chac, to a game of Pok-a-tok in attempt to get Chac to pour out his rain on the very dry fields of corn. Although it seems foolish for a mortal to challenge a god, Pik does it anyway.
Genre: Fiction
Grade Level: K-5
Readers who will like this: Readers who are interested in cultural stories as well as tales of triumph, coming-of-age and of sports will enjoy this book.
Response/Rating (1-4): I rate this book a 4! The art in this book is incredibly stunning and detailed! It is a great testament to Wisniewski's art to convey a sense of time, emotion and color through paper!
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Where did the Mayans live? What modern game does Pok-a-tok resemble? What other cultural story--of someone challenging a god--does this story resemble?
