Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters

Bibliography: Steptoe J. (1987). Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. New York, NY: Lothrop Lee & Shepard Books.
Brief Annotation: Mufaro is a man who has two beautiful daughters who were complete opposites. Nyasha who was kind and considerate and Manyara who was selfish and spoiled. The king decides to take a wife, the woman who is the most beautiful daughter in the land. Mufaro wants one of his daughters to be chosen by the king and Manyara sets out to make sure she is the one who is chosen.
Genre: Folktale, Picturebook
Grade Level: 1-3
Readers who will like this: Children who are looking for a tale that is somewhat similar to the Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Those who are looking for a tale from Africa.
Response/Rating: I would give this book a 3 because it integrates the African surroundings and culture very well through the words and the illustrations. Also the story presents a very valuable lesson about how there is true beauty in everyone not just in their looks, but in who they are as a person.
One question to ask before a read-aloud: Have you ever felt that you had to put on a ton of makeup or wear the coolest outfit to prove you are more beautiful/handsome than someone else?
