Bibliographic Information: Wargin, K. (2003) V is For Viking A Minnesota Alphabet. Illus. Karen and Rebecca Latham. Chelsea, MI: Sleeping Bear Press.
Brief Annotation: This is unlike any alphabet book I remember reading. Each page is engulfed with beautiful artwork. Along with the letter of the alphabet and the depiction of the object being introduced, there is a brief history on the object being presented. The history of each letter object has a connection with Minnesota. This not only makes connections to letters and words, but also to facts about Minnesota.
Genre: Alphabet book, Picture book, Nonfiction book
Grade Level: Pre k- 6
Readers who will like this: Children learning the alphabet; Children who enjoy history; Children who live in Minnesota; Children who enjoy art.
Response/Rating: 4; This book was like three books rolled into one, it was a picture book, a history lesson on Minnesota, and an alphabet book. Even for children who are not learning the alphabet, or already know it, this book can still grab and hold their attention via art or facts. It has something for everyone to learn, for instance I found out the reason Minnesota is called the gopher state, and how the nickname originated. There are facts that are relevant to any lesson plan and a wide range of interests! Loved this book!
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you think the title of the books means? Why Viking? What other word starts with V?
