Bibliography: Bunting, Eve. (1994). Smoky Night. David Diaz. Orlando, FL: Harcourt Brace & Company.
Brief Annotation: This book was written in response to riots in the early 1990’s. It tells the story of Daniel, a young boy who evacuates his apartment building, and his cat, Jasmine. What will Daniel and his mother learn from Jasmine?
Genre: Picture book, realistic fiction, fiction.
Grade Level: 1-6
Readers who will like this: Children who like pictures, animals, and rescue books.
Response/Rating (1-4): 2; The story is well written and sends an important message, however, I was not a huge fan of the illustrations. They were a little too busy for me.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever learned a lesson from one of your pets?
