Harlem

Bibliography: Myers, W. D., Myers, C., & Saylor, D. (1997). Harlem: a poem. New York: Scholastic Press.

Annotation: Harlem is a book that explains the life of Harlem after African Americans moved there from the south through a poem. There is no plot or story line. The book consists of a lyric style of writing about the city, people, the good times and the not so good times.

Genre: Non-Fiction

Grade: 4-6

Readers: The readers that would enjoy this book are readers that like historical fiction and poems.

Rate/Response: 7 I really enjoyed how this book was put together. The illustrations were cutouts of various pictures and made the images pop out more than usual. The language is very unique and has a lyrical style to it. I fell this book may be hard for younger ages to comprehend, especially with the inconsistency of structure.

Question: Have you heard of a city called Harlem. Do you know where it is? Have you ever been to Harlem?
