Bibiography: Bunting, E. (1994). Smoky Night. Illus. David Diaz. Orlando, FL: Voyager Books Harcourt Brace & Company.
Brief Annotation: During a riot in the city of Los Angeles, a little boy and his mother's house gets caught on fire. While escaping, the little boy is forced to leave without his cat Jasmine. Once at the shelter, Jasmine is returned to the boy and jasmine and the neighbors cat, who jasmine didn't know nor like in the begining, share a bowl of milk together.
Genre: Fiction
Grade Level: K-6
Readers who will like this: Anyone who enjoys books with action and suspense and enjoys reading books based on true events.
Response/Rating: I would give this book a 4 mainly because I love the illustrations. Smoky Night is definitley deserving of a Caldecott medal! The story is also well told with lots of suspense incorporated in the language which keeps me focused on the story.
One question to ask before a read-aloud: Have you ever been in a hurry to get somewhere and been forced to leave behind something or someone that means so much to you?
