Strega Nona's Magic Lessons

Bibliographic Information: de Paola, T. (1982). Strega Nona's Magic Lessons. New York, New York: Harcourt Jovanovich.
Brief Annotation: Big Anthony disguises himself by dressing up like a girl so he would be able to take magic lessons from Strega Nona. He is not doing very well, so he takes it upon himself to just read the magic book himself. He tries to turn an iron pot gold but instead "turns Strega Nona into a toad." He promises not to play with magic anymore to bring Strega Nona back.

Genre: Concept book
Grade Level: 1-3
Readers who will like this: Readers who like magic and fairy tales.
Rating/Response: 3 out of 4. This is a good story about teaching kids to follow directions and to do what they are told otherwise the consequences might turn out differently then they would have expected.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Why should you follow directions?
