Smokey Night

Bibliography: Bunting, E. (1994). Smoky Night. Illus. David Diaz. New York, NY: Harcourt Brace & Company.

Annotation: The story is about the riots that happened in California in the early 90’s. The story focuses on Daniel and him losing his cat within the fire. His cat and a Mrs. Kims cat come together in the fire and accept each other’s differences. Daniel’s mom and Mrs. Kim do the same.

Genre: Fiction

Grade: 3-5

Readers: The readers that would enjoy this book are readers that enjoy historical fiction and sad books.

Rate/Response: 9 I love this book. It is very moving and incredibly sad and heart filled. When I first read the book I focused on the loss of the cat and then after our discussion I focused more on the issues and the symbols of the cats.

Question: Have you ever lost your pet? Have other people scared you while you were in your home? Do you know what a riot is?
