Bibliography: Robb, D., & Smith, A. (2007). Ox, house, stick: the history of our alphabet. Watertown, MA: Charlesbridge.

Annotation: This book is an advanced alphabet book. It discusses the origins of our alphabet and how the letters had different meanings during different times throughout history and within various cultures. The book also displays the way cultures wrote the alphabet and how the people would pronounce the letters within words.

Genre: Non-Fiction

Grade: 4-6

Readers: The readers that will enjoy this are historical readers and readers that like to learn about the alphabet.

Rate/Response: 8, I really enjoyed this alphabet book. It was refreshing that there was a children’s book that was more complex than learning A B C’s. I really enjoyed that the book showed how the alphabet originated and the meanings of the letters to Romans and Greeks.

Question: Where do you think the alphabet started? Do you think there are many different ways to write the alphabet?
