Brief Annotation: Mirandy desperately wants Brother Wind to be her partner at the Cakewalk. The only way to do that is to capture him. Mirandy is willing to turn down her best friend's request to be partners due to his clumsiness. When she has finally captured the wind and is secured her win, she whispers a secret wish to Brother Wind.

Readers who will like this: Anyone interested in learning about dance that is rooted in African-American culture will enjoy this story. Any child that delights in where the imagination can lead will also enjoy this story.
Response/Rating (1-4): I rate this book 3 of 4. The story was sweet and playful. The artwork is what made this story come to life. Jerry Pinkney's art in this book is full of detail, color, movement and soft lines that portray the fluid imagination and whimsy of children.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Does anyone know what is a Cakewalk? Do you have any cultural traditions that you enjoy participating in? If you were going to capture the wind, how would you do it? Why do you suppose winning the cake walk was so important to Mirandy?
