Sylvester and the Magic Pebble

Steig, W. (1969). Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. New York, New York: Simon and Schuster.

Brief Annotation: Sylvester's favorite thing to do is to collect unusual looking pebbles. One day he comes across a pebble that he finds out grants wishes when you touch it. Eager to show his family and make some wishes, he gets in the path of a lion and wishes himself into a rock and is no longer touching the pebble. His parents search but have no idea he is just a rock only a mile away. He slowly loses hope of ever becoming a donkey again.

Genre: Animal Fantasy

Grade Level: K-4

Response/Rating: 4; I remember reading this one too as a kid and adored the character of Sylvester and wanted nothing more for hiw to not be a rock any more.

Question: If you could wish for anything in the world what would it be?
