Abel's Island

Steig, W. (1976). Abel’s Island. New York, NY: Farrar, Straus, Giroux.

Annotation: This book is about a mouse named Abel who, while out on a picnic with his wife, is swept away by a storm and ends up down the river on an island. He is stuck on the island by himself for almost a year before he is able to make it across the river and travel back home to his loving wife.

Genre: Animal fiction

Grades: 2-5

Readers: This book would be perfect for children who can read independently, and could be enjoyed by a younger audience if it was read aloud. Children who like adventure/nature stories and talking animals would enjoy this book.

Rating/Response: 4; I loved this book. Abel’s character was very loving and hardworking. The overall story was very interesting and entertaining, and the love story was nice.
