Shrek!

Bibliographic Information: Steig, W. (2007). The One and Only Shrek! Plus 5 Other Stories. New York, NY: Square Fish.

Brief Annotation: Shrek is an outcast of the land; he is a foul, stinky, ugly monster; but happy none-the-less. When his parents force him to leave his home he begins his trek across the land, having interesting encounters with others. Upon meeting one of the lands people he finds out an exciting event that is to occur to him- and with that knowledge he is off on his adventure!

Genre: Storybook; Fiction

Grade Level: K-4

Readers who will like this: Children who find humor in everything; children who have opposite interests than others; children with a corky imagination.

Response/Rating: 4; The language in this book is excellent, I was especially impressed with the descriptions and songs throughout. Steig shines a light on the alternate preferences of individuals and how everyone has different things that make him or her happy.

One question I would ask before a read aloud: What makes you happy? What do you think makes people who are different from you happy?
