The Amazing Bone

Steig, W. (1976). The Amazing Bone. New York: Farrar, Steaus, and Giroux.

Brief Annotation: A young pig named Pearl is casually walking home when she stumbles upon a a bone on the ground. This bone is unlike anything she has seen before because it can talk and imitate any sound. She decides to take it to show her family but along the way encounters a fox who is very hungry. With the help of the magical bone she tried to make it out uneaten.

Genre: Animal Fantasy

Grade Level: 2-4

Readers who will like this: Children who like magical stories or who like the more suspenseful feel to a story.

Response/Rating: 4; I loved this book as a kid and still enjoy it now. The magic of a talking bone being there for a pig and the humor keeps me entertained the whole time.

One question you would ask before you read aloud: Does anyone know what to do if a stranger talks to you?
