The Amazing Bone

Bibliography: Steig, William. The amazing bone. New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1976

Annotation: While a young pig named Pearl was walking home she met a unique person. She met a talking bone. The bone and Pearl were walking through the woods when some mean kids tried to steal her purse. The bone scared them away. Further down the road Pearl and the bone were kidnapped by a fox. The bone said some magic words and saved Pearl from being eaten.

Genre: Animal Fantasy

Grade: 2-4

Reader: Children that like mystery and suspense. I would also say children that like scary stories or dangerous adventure stories.

Rate/Response: 5 This book is extremely well written. However some of the scenes and illustrations from the book may send the wrong message to kids. An example would be the young boys trying to steal Pearl’s purse.

Question: Do you know what to do when a stranger comes up to you? Have you ever become friends with someone unfamiliar? Have you ever been in danger?
