Home For Christmas

Bibliography: Brett, J. (2011). Home for Christmas. New York, NY: G. P. Putnam's Sons.
Brief Annotation: Rollo, a troll, does not like to help his family and never does. One day he takes his knapsack and runs towards the mountains away from his family. Throughout his adventures living in the tree's, in the grass/pond, and in the cold snowy mountains, Rollo realizes after awhile that he does want to be home with his family. Even if that means doing chores.
Genre: Animal fiction, picturebook
Grade Level: K-3rd grade
Readers who will like this: Children who don't like doing chores or have a hard time doing what they are asked to do at home and at school. Children who enjoy reading books with wild animals in them.
Response/Rating: I would give this book a 4 mainly because I am in LOVE with the illustrations! Jan Brett is a wonderful illustrator almost as good as she is an author! I liked that the nature of the book revolves around the issue of doing what we are asked, that readers can relate to, but it also involves fictional aspects that make the book enjoyable such as the animals.
One question to ask before a read-aloud: Have you ever wanted to leave home and your family because you had to do stuff that you didn't want to do? Where would you go if you left home like Rollo did?
