Oliver Button Is a Sissy

Bibliography: dePaola, Tomie. (1979). Oliver Button Is a Sissy. Orlando, FL: Harcourt Brace & Company.
Brief Annotation: Oliver Button doesn’t seem to fit in with other boys his age. He likes to read, draw, play dress up, and dance! Because of this he is teased by the boys at school. Once they see him dance at the talent show will they stop picking on him?
Genre: Picture book, fiction
Grade Level: K-4
Readers who will like this: Children who feel different or feel like they don’t fit into the gender roles people expect of them.
Response/Rating (1-4): 4; I really liked this book because it sent a message saying it’s okay to defy those gender roles forced upon us by society.
Questions you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever felt different? Have you ever felt different from how people want you too be?
